Harn Museum of Art Temporary Exhibits

Harn Museum of Art Temporary Exhibits

Exhibitions are drawn from Harn collections as well as loans from both private lenders, artists, and other art museums.

Windows and Mirrors: Staff Selections from the Photography Collection (March 19- November 3, 2024)
Opening in the Harn’s Rubin Photography Gallery is a “first” for the museum: a staff curated exhibition. Thirty-four staff members volunteered to choose a favorite photograph from the collection and write about it from their own perspective. In all, forty photographs (some chose two) with individual texts will be exhibited together. This exciting group-curation aligns with a major component of the Harn’s strategic plan: to be inclusive, diverse, and representative of the university and greater Gainesville community it serves, not least, the people who work at the Harn.

Surrealism at the Harn: A Centennial Celebration (December 9, 2023-June 2, 2024) marks the 100th anniversary of the Surrealist movement, which began in Paris in 1924 and continues to influence artmaking to this day. The exhibition presents selections from the Harn’s Modern and Contemporary collections representing the emergence of Surrealism in the 20th century as well as the global expression of Surrealist sensibilities in the 21st century.

Metamorphosis: Reshaping Contemporary Art (October 31, 2023-October 26, 2025) features artists who are rethinking traditional materials and techniques to create innovative works of art. This exhibition spotlights history, location and interpretation and their impact on the artists’ practices, materials and outcomes. The works in the section titled History focus on how artists use either historical practices or historical knowledge in new ways. Location highlights how places inspire artists or how artists depict various locations. Finally, Interpretation explores the way artists and viewers understand artwork from the past and continue to add dialogue to specific narratives.

Upcoming! Kaleidoscope of Colors in Asian Art (April 30, 2024- April 26, 2026)
Color is one of the timeless and foundational elements of art, transcending boundaries of time, place and culture. The diverse collection of Asian art at the Harn Museum of Art boasts an extensive range of colors, each carrying rich cultural, religious, social and political significance. The dynamic palette of colors found in Asian art not only captivates the eyes but also unveils stories of cross-cultural interaction, trade networks, and artistic advancement that span the vast landscape of Asia.

Serving as a gateway to understanding the rich tapestry of Asian art and culture, the exhibition titled Kaleidoscope of Colors in Asian Art introduces a fresh perspective for visitors’ exploration and appreciation of Asian art through the prism of colors.
